Cherry Mobile Superion Plus Duo: Dual Core Android Tablet and Phone for PHP 6,999

Before the year ends, Cherry Mobile has just released an upgrade to their Superion tablet. Called the Cherry Mobile Superion Plus Duo, it's a tablet that functions also as a phone. Now that's good news for people looking for a tablet that has a phone functionality, which are missing on some known budget tabs in the market today.

Here are the specs of the Cherry Mobile Superion Plus Duo:
  • 7" capacitive touchscreen
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor
  • 4GB internal memory, expandable up to 32GB microSD card
  • 2MP main camera
  • VGA front camera
  • 3G and WiFi connectivity
  • single SIM
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • micro USB 2.0
  • Price: PHP 6,999
I can say the tablet is good enough. It is powered by a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which should do well on apps and games. However, the internal memory is a little small if you love to dump your tablet with apps, music and movies but fortunately, there is a microSD card slot so that you can expand it. The dual camera is just enough. And a nice bonus is the phone function, which lets you call and text. As I said earlier, most tablets don't have this function (like China tabs). But hey, this is worth only PHP 6,999! Quite affordable for a decent tablet, right?

You can purchase it on Cherry Mobile stores nationwide.

If you have this device, please don't forget to share your experience using it by making a comment below! Thank you and Happy New Year!!

Cherry Mobile Rave: 1 GHz Snapdragon Android smartphone for PHP 3,299

Year 2012 is about to end yet Cherry Mobile is still expanding their lineup by releasing an affordable Android smartphone, the Cherry Mobile Rave, which retails for only PHP 3,299.

Cherry Mobile Rave has the following specs:
  • 3.5" HVGA capacitive touchscreen
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • memory expandable up to 32GB microSD card
  • 2MP camera (no front camera)
  • 3G/WiFi connectivity
  • GPS
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • Price: PHP 3,299
Rave is perfect for those people who wants to experience Android for the first time. The 3.5" screen is just enough for anyone, and the 1GHz Snapdragon processor is just sufficient for some decent apps and gaming. It still runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread but that's alright as the specs are not that high. And can we complain on such a price?

CD-R King 10" Fastpad: 10-inch Android tablet for PHP 7,280

CD-R King has been selling tablets for quite some time, although they are not that famous as some people attribute CD-R King products as not quality and won't last long. Going back to their tablets, they already have several models, ranging from 7" to 10" Android tablets. Just this month, they've just released a new model, the 10" Fastpad (FP-005-XON) which retails for PHP 7,280 only.
Here are the 10" Fastpad specs:
  • CPU: Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 1.2GHZ Multi Core+PMU AXP209+GPU/VPU Mali-400 GPU@350MHz
  • 10" capacitive touch-screen QVGA LCD panel, 1024x768 pixel
  • Memory: 1GB DDR3
  • Storage: 4GB NAND Flash (supports microSD Card up to 32GB)
  • Camera: 0.3MP front; 2.0MP rear
  • WiFi
  • 3G: supports external 3G dongle
  • Supports G-Sensor and Gyroscope gaming
  • Supports Flash player 10.3
  • Built-in speaker & microphone
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

  • Actual usage time: 5hrs-6hrs
  • Standby time 72hrs
  • Dimensions and Weight: 242 x 189 x 9.7mm., 608g
Judging the specs, the 10" Fastpad can perform decently on apps and games with the powerful enough 1.2GHz processor. The screen is nice and big too, as it's qHD and measures 10 inch. 1GB RAM and 4GB internal memory is very sufficient, and it's even expandable with a 32GB microSD card! The battery is at a high capacity of 8000mAh which can surely deliver hours and hours of gaming and movies. Overall, it's a bang-for-the-buck tablet. Retailing for only PHP 7,280, it can match up with some tablets in the market.

If you have the device, please tell us your experience using it by commenting below. Thank you!

Cloudfone Thrill 430x: The Battery Monster

Battery life for me is an important aspect in choosing an Android smartphone. A lot of them has only 1,300 to 1,800mAh battery which only lasts less than a day or a little more if you are not a heavy user. As we all know, Android phones are battery hogs so lots of phone manufacturers now are using bigger capacity batteries for their devices, including the Motorola for their DROID RAZR MAXX HD, which sports a whopping 3,300mAh battery. Here in the Philippines, I think the Lenovo P700 is the first Android device here to have a 2,500 mAh battery which can last for two days.

Surprisingly, a new mobile company here wants to compete through the monstrous battery capacity of its flagship phone. I'm talking about Cloudfone, which is relatively new to the mobile industry (I think they are partners with Globe) and their flagship device, the Thrill 430x which has a 4,160mAh battery!!!

Here are the Cloudfone Thrill 430x specs:
  • 4.3" IPS qHD capacitive touchscreen, 960 x 540 pixels
  • Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon S4 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 4GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB)
  • 768MB RAM
  • 8MP AF back camera with dual LED flash
  • VGA front camera
  • Bluetooth, WiFI, 3G connectivity
  • GPS
  • Built-in YAMAHA music amplifier with AAC speaker
  • 124.4 x 65.4 x 14.2mm, 180g
  • Android 4.0 ICS
  • 4,160mAh battery
  • 1000 hours standby, 40 hours talktime
  • Price: PHP 7,777

Judging the specs:
  • The screen is large enough and clear, as it is qHD (quarter HD).
  • Fast performance on gaming and apps, thanks to the dual core 1GHz processor
  • internal memory and RAM are good enough as well.
  • quality photos with the powerful 8MP camera that has dual LED flash which is perfect for low light shooting
  • VGA front camera for video chats should do just fine
  • the built-in Yamaha music amplifier with AAC speaker will definitely play nice sounds for your music demands
  • and of course, the main selling point, the 4,160 mAh battery which will bring you to hours and hours or a day or more of music, games, and apps
  • very affordable for only PHP7,777.

Starmobile Engage 7HD vs Ainol Novo 7 Flame

Android tablets are truly getting a lot of attention today. Ever since the appearance of affordable tablets from China in the Philippine market today, lots of local mobile companies are also releasing their own tablets to compete with these China tabs. So today I want to compare two famous tablets in the market today: the Ainol Novo 7 Flame and the Starmobile Engage 7HD, both of which sport a 7-inch screen and are priced closely.
Starmobile Engage 7HD
The Starmobile Engage 7HD is a 7-inch tablet by Starmobile, a local mobile company here in the Philippines that is receiving a lot of attention not only with these newly-released tablet, but also with their affordable yet powerful Android smartphones Astra and Crystal. So without further ado, here are its specs:
  • 7" capacitive multitouch (5 point) IPS HD Display, 1280x800
  • ARM Cortex-A9 1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor AML8726-MX
  • 8GB Internal Memory (expandable up to 32GB)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP back Camera with flash
  • VGA front camera
  • WiFi connectivity
  • AGPS
  • 4000mAh battery
  • 400 hours standby, 5 hours video playback
  • USB on the go cable for 3G modems
  • Android 4.0 ICS
  • Dimensions: 206 x 129 x 11mm
  • Price: PHP 7,990

On the other hand, the Novo 7 Flame is manufactured by Ainol, a famous Chinese tablet manufacturer. Flame is one of Ainol's famous tablets, along with Aurora, Elf, Crystal, and Hero, all of which are gaining praises for its good designs and specs at a very affordable price. Flame's specs are:
  • 7" capacitive multitouch (5 point) IPS HD Display, 1280x800
  • Dual Core AMLogic AML8726-M6 1.5GHz
  • GPU: Dual Core Mali 400
  • 16GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB
  • 1GB DDR3 RAM
  • 5MP AF back camera with LED Flash
  • 2 MP front camera
  • WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Android 4.0.3 (upgradeable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean)
  • Dimensions: 186.6 x 126.93 x 10.6mm
  • Battery: 5000MAh
  • Price: PHP 8,999
Comparing the two:
  • Both has nice vivid screens, both are IPS displays and has HD resolution
  • Ainol sports a more powerful 1.5GHz dual core processor and a larger internal storage.
  • On the other hand, Engage 7HD outperforms Flame in the photography department, as it has an 8MP back camera compared to Flame's 5MP.
  • Both runs on ICS but Flame can be upgraded or may come in Android 4.1 Jellybean out-of-the-box.
  • Flame has Bluetooth connectivity
  • On the dimensions, Flame is a little slim (by 0.4mm) but both should do well in the hands.
  • Flame's battery capacity is larger (although there are little issues) by 1000mAh.
  • Ainol Novo 7 Flame is pricier than Starmobile Engage 7HD, although some stores may sell Ainol Novo 7 Flame by PHP10K-11K. (It's PHP8,999 at Novo7 Tech).
In conclusion:
  • If you're willing to pay a thousand pesos more, Ainol Novo 7 Flame is a better choice as it offers a faster processor and bigger internal storage, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and a much longer battery life. If you love playing HD or graphic intensive apps and games, this will do the thing better. On the other hand, if you're more on shooting good photos and wanted a simple tablet that can do well also on games and apps, then the Engage 7HD is the way to go.

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 1700 mAh lithium-polymer battery

The screen is large enough and vibrant, thanks to the qHD resolution. On the photography department, photos will surely be good because of the 8MP camera with BSI sensor, plus a 2MP front camera which is perfect for video chats. O+ 8.5 Android Review, Specs, Benchmark

According to O+ USA's Facebook page, they are 'a technology company based in the United States who aims to cultivate technophile all over the world, starting with the world’s busiest mobile phone hub – Asia'.

Just released last November 2012 and out only for a limited time according to O+ USA, the O+ 8.5 Android is a product of its famous air shuffling O+ 6.3 and O+ 8.7 Android. This made the 8.5 Android more unique than other smartphones. So, if you’re tight in budget and if you want to be different from others because of its air shuffle features, then this phone is for you. Honestly, I only heard about O+ when I bought one. With no intention of buying it at all because I was planning to buy another phone that day. (Di ko nalang sasabihin anong Filipino phone.^^). It just so happened that when I was in their kiosk (Filipino phone), another customer was very mad about the specs of their product (kasi daw di daw totoo ang specs na nakalagay). While they were arguing, I went to O+ kiosk. Then the saleslady started to demonstrate about the 8.5 android. I instantly loved the unit despite the specs which is a little bit lower than the rebranded phone I was supposed to buy because of its iPhone 5 look and of course the Air Shuffle.

Packaging and Box Contents

The package itself is also unique from other phones. It is packed in a plastic crystal case which is very different from other typical box packages. Inside the case you’ll find the unit itself (of course), 1500 mAh battery, charger, headset, manual/user guide and a FREE 4GB microSD card.

Design and Build

The design is somewhat very similar to Cherry Mobile Flare but O+ is not a rebranded phone which made me very confident about the quality. As of now, it only comes in black color. Also, 8.5 is slightly heavier than CM flare which is very good because you can really feel its presence. The front side has its 4” capacitive display and 4 capacitive buttons below it (menu, home, back and search), a VGA camera, speaker grills for receiving calls, a tiny pinhole just below the search button for voice calls or recording and its sensor for Air Shuffle just beside the front camera. On the left side you can find the volume rocker. While on the right side is where the micro-USB port is located. At the top of the unit, you can find the 3.5mm headphone jack and the power/lock button. The 5MP Autofocus camera with a single led flash and speaker grills are located at the back part of the unit with an O+ logo at the cover. Just beside the O+ logo at the back is another pinhole which is for noise reduction as O+ 8.5 has a noise reduction feature.

Each side of the phone has a glossy black finish which looks classy. The back cover is made of plastic with a matte black finish which is good because it doesn’t leave fingerprints on. The design of the back cover is somewhat like has an anti-slip (yung merong slanting lines sa gitna para di madulas yung phone).

One thing I noticed is that the power and volume rocker buttons are a little bit loose and looks like it’s not secured very well. Also, the power button is a little bit smaller (parang iingatan mo talaga siya). The back cover however has a tendency to loosen up when you repeatedly remove it. It produces a little creaking sound when the back cover is starting to loosen up.

O+ 8.5 has a 4” WVGA 800 x 480 TFT capacitive touchscreen which is very responsive and sensitive when touched especially during texting. Though it’s not as good as IPS display but it offers clear and rich colors. Angle viewing is not that good either. When tilting the phone facing down, the screen will turn blurry. Well, it is expected for a non-IPS display phone. But the good thing about a capacitive screen is that it doesn’t consume a large amount of battery.

Another downside is that it doesn’t have a built-in screen protection like Gorilla Glass or anti-scratch screen. It only has an ordinary screen which is very vulnerable to scratches. So it is advisable to put a customize screen protector because there are no accessories yet available for O+ units.

Software and UI

The O+ 8.5 runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS which is very compatible in almost all Google Play Store apps. O+ doesn’t confirm yet if it is upgradeable to Jelly Bean. It is powered by a 1GHz processor and has a 512 MB RAM (474 MB max in benchmark). I’m not really sure why during benchmarking, the maximum ram is 474 MB instead of 512 MB. But I think it has to deal with the ICS OS or other built in functions. This is better though compared to some rebranded phone I’ve seen which is the max RAM is only 356 MB instead of 512 MB. You can see the complete benchmark result below.

O+ 8.5 doesn’t have an O+ app unlike CM or MyPhone which has CM apps or Pinoy apps, respectively. It’s good news for O+ users because it doesn’t consume additional memory and space. It has also a built in Android launcher which is not customizable. So I recommend using GO launcher or Atom launcher or any launchers that suits you.

Messaging and Telephony

The stock messaging features of O+ 8.5 is not astonishing. It has a boring and non-customizable interface. The QWERTY keyboard doesn’t have any enter key either. So I suggest using GO SMS or other SMS applications. The picture below shows the stock messaging of O+ 8.5.

No problems found during phone calls. There is voice clarity during conversation except if you’re in a place with bad signals. Also, it has instant messaging features if calls are not answered.

There’s a little problem in the O+ 8.5’s contacts/phonebook. It doesn’t recognize area codes (for ex. 0923-1234657 between +63923-1234567) even though they are just similar. But it can be easily solved because you can save multiple contacts. So I suggest saving both numbers in 0923-1234567 or +63923-1234567 formats in the contacts. Failure to save both numbers will result to unrecognized sender or incoming voice call.

Air Shuffle

Now the best part, The Air Shuffle. Air Shuffle is O+’s flagship or trademark. Although air shuffle is just the same as motion sensor, but no other smartphone companies utilizes this feature very well like O+. Air shuffle is moving without actually touching the screen. The secret is that it has a very tiny, almost invincible sensor just right side of the front camera. But it is only applicable in capturing picture/ videos, viewing picture in gallery, listening to FM radio or MP3s. It is very convenient, just like if you’re listening to music, you don’t need to go to the player to select the next song but you’ll just simply swipe your palm above the phone and it will play another song. Same thing in capturing pictures, if you don’t want your phone to be moved during pressing the capture button, you can just simply again swipe your hands on the phone and it will automatically take the picture.

If you’re a hardcore gamer or uses phone as a gaming device, then this phone is not for you. Because it has only a two-point multi-touch screen, It means you can’t press 3-5 fingers together in playing. I’ve tried playing Dead Trigger in 8.5. It has no problem in gameplay, it doesn’t lag or hang-up. But the problem is that you can’t aim or shoot while walking because it only supports two-point touch. All I can say is that O+ 8.5 can play every game in the Playstore because it has a decent GPU hardware and a 1 Ghz single core. But you cannot play well for games that require using more than 2 fingers together. Below are my games installed in my 8.5 and screen shot of the game Zombie Dash. Only a few games were installed because I don’t usually use my phone in playing as I have my own gaming device.

Death Moto

Zombie Dash

The O+ 8.5 has a 5MP autofocus rear camera and a VGA front camera which can be used during video call like in Skype. It has a built-in panorama feature which is really great. Taking pictures using flash takes about 2-3 sec before capturing. Aside from that, taking pictures is just a snap, either using the capture button or the air shuffle feature. It has also a built-in screen shot. Just press the power button and volume down button together to have instant screen shots. Below are samples of pictures and video taken using the 8.5.

panorama shot sample

OK here’s the downside. It has only a 1500 mAh battery which is somewhat the minimum capacity of any android phones. For typical use like texting, calling, listening to music and playing a little games, the battery will last you for a day. With 15-20% battery life left. For gaming or hardcore use, it will just take you 2-3 hrs of playing time. So the charger will be your bestfriend here.

  • It has an air shuffle feature which is very unique and make your phone different from others
  • Sleek and beautiful design
  • Fast and very responsive user interface
  • With built-in panorama and screen shot so you don’t need to download apps to enjoy these features
  • Can offer a decent quality gameplay
  • Contacts and phonebook cannot recognize between 09 or +639 numbers
  • Air shuffle sensor is not that sensitive compared to its new released O+ 8.9 and O+ 8.12
  • Shorter battery life because it has only 1500 mah battery which requires you to bring your charger always.
  • Cannot play well in games which requires more than two point touch

If you want to be unique and different with the others because of its air shuffle feature, and if you’re looking for alternative cheap phones and with a built quality, then this phone is for you. Although there are other phones with a price range between PHP 4k-6k and offers more specs than O+ 8.5 like Cherry Mobile, MyPhone and etc., it’s still up to you which phone best suits you.

  • 4’’ 800 x 480 Capacitive multi-touch Screen
  • Android 4.0.4 (ICS)
  • Air Shuffle FM, Music, Photos, Camera –highlight new feature of being able to Air Shuffle in taking photos!
  • 1GHz processor for quick access to FB, Twitter on the go.
  • Dual camera with 5MP Auto Focus back camera with flash
  • Noise Reduction for clearer communication
  • Quad band and 3G connectivity
  • Voice command navigation [over GPS/AGPS]
  • Games Galore! Up to 32GB expandable memory
  • Easy file sharing via Bluetooth connectivity
  • 1500mAh Battery
  • Dual SIM
  • 512 RAM and 2gb internal memory

Cherry Mobile Blaze officially announced

Cherry Mobile surprised everyone when they announced today through Facebook a new budget Android smartphone, the Cherry Mobile Blaze, a dual-core Android phone that retails for a very affordable price of PHP 6,499.

The Cherry Mobile Blaze has the following specs:
  • 4.7" FWVGA capacitive touchscreen
  • 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 8MP camera with LED flash
  • VGA front camera
  • dual-sim/dual standby
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • PRICE: PHP 6,499
The Cherry Mobile Blaze is expected to be available this Christmas.

DTC GT5 Astroid Plus: Android Experience for PHP 2,999 only!

DTC Mobile, a new local mobile company here in the Philippines, has just added a new phone to their Android lineup, the DTC GT5 Astroid Plus

DTC Mobile gave only the following specs on their Facebook page. (I'll update you once I get more specs):
  • 3.5" HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 320 x 480
  • single-core 1GHz MTK6515 processor
  • 512MB ROM
  • 256MB RAM
  • 2MP rear camera
  • WiFI connectivity
  • Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo Messenger, Youtube
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • dual band: 900 / 1800 MHz
  • Android Gingerbread
  • Price: PHP 2,999
Since this is an upgrade to its older brother, the DTC GT3 Astroid, it should have at least a single-core 1GHz processor, a larger RAM (GT3 has only 256MB RAM) and a bigger internal memory, the same or better camera (GT3 Astroid has a 5MP camera w/ flash and a VGA front-facing camera) to keep up with competition.

Fortunately, the processor is now at 1GHz and the internal memory is much larger. But unfortunately, most of the specs remain and some downgraded. The camera is now only 2MP and no more front camera. The amount of RAM remained the same.

Also, it still runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, compared to other local mobile competitors whose Android phones are already ICS out-of-the-box. But what's good is that it's very affordable.

It's already available at DTC Mobile Kiosks and Mega One Phones and Gadget Shop for PHP 2,999.

If you have one, please don't forget to share your experience with the device, or help us to complete or correct the specs if you find mistakes. Thank you!
