Western Digital My Book 4TB Review

Having a backup for your files is very important, especially if you go crazy whenever you lose them (just like me!). That's where a storage device comes in place. Fortunately, Western Digital has the My Book, a desktop storage device that comes with a lot of features and space, yet affordable.

Our review unit has a 4TB capacity (that's lots and lots of storage space!!!). For those who are not familiar with My Book, it's an external desktop drive with capacities ranging from 2TB to 4TB. It works for both Windows and Mac too. So is it a good choice for a backup device? Find out more after the jump.

Package

The Western Digital My Book comes with a USB cable, AC adapter, quick install guide, and adapters.

Design

The Western Digital My Book sports a glossy all-black plastic body, which is very nice to look at. The build is sturdy and firm and there are no creaking sounds when I tried to bend it a little. It's not too big and not too small, just the right size for an external desktop storage  and fits wherever you put it.

The front sports the logo as well as the LED indicator.
At the back is the USB 3.0 port, the power port, and the lock slot.

Features

Here are some of the features of the Western Digital My Book (from their website)

Ultra-fast transfer rates

My Book desktop storage is optimized for the best possible data transfer rates. Connect this drive to a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port to save and access files up to 3x faster than with USB 2.0.

Automatic backup software

WD SmartWare Pro automatic backup software works quietly in the background to help protect your data using minimal PC resources. Select automatic continuous backup to instantly create a second copy of your files. Or select the scheduled backup option to back up your files on your schedule and take control of your backup.

System-level backup

Acronis® True Image WD Edition is an integrated software suite that ensures security of all information on your PC. It can back up the entire disk drive or selected partitions, including your operating system, applications, settings and all of your data. You can also use the software to securely delete any confidential data you no longer need.

Local and cloud backup

WD SmartWare Pro lets you choose. Back up your files to your My Book drive or back up your files to the cloud using your Dropbox™ account.* You can also back up files from your Dropbox account to your My Book drive for extra protection.

Universal connectivity

With this drive you get connectivity with the latest USB 3.0 devices as well as backward compatibility with USB 2.0 devices. (USB 3.0 cable included.)

Massive capacity

With up to 4 TB capacity, there's plenty of room to store and protect your precious memories and important files.

WD quality inside and out

We know your data is important to you. So we build the drive inside to our demanding requirements for durability, shock tolerance and long-term reliability. Then, we protect the drive with a durable enclosure designed for beauty.

Software

The Western Digital My Book, just like the My Passport drives, comes preinstalled with WD Smartware Pro, as well as WD Drive, WD Unlocker, and WD Utilities.

Installing them is easy-peasy and the interface is very user-friendly as well. Just perfect for managing this device.

Performance

Our review is not complete without the benchmarks. So here are the results from CrystalDiskMark, ATTO Disk Benchmark, and HD Tune Pro.

CrystalDiskMark Shizuku Edition
ATTO Disk Benchmark

HD Tune Pro
On a USB 2.0 port, the My Book performed well on the three benchmarks, each showing consistent results. But the My Passport Slim's marks were better.

(If you have a USB 3.0 port, read and write speeds will be much faster. Also, your hardware can affect its performance.)

In addition, I tried to copy a 1.39 GB file on it and it finished at an impressive 1 minute and 30 seconds. I then copied a larger file (9.36 GB) and it took only 7 minutes!

The Western Digital My Book performed so quietly you almost won't hear a thing in it. I didn't quite expect it from an external desktop storage.

Conclusion

The Western Digital My Book is an excellent option if you are looking for an external desktop storage that you'll place beside your computer or laptop. It has a great build and performance, and it fits well with your desk. More than that, it's very affordable.

It's available now at Villman for P9,288 (4TB version). I haven't seen the price for the 2TB version but I'll update as soon as I get the info.
